• Spambot: A computer program that can visit websites and usenet news groups in the same manner that a human reader would, and can thereby collect what look like valid e-mail addresses for inclusion in a spam mailing list.
• Spam which consists of a large number of messages sent to a large number of newsgroups is called Horizontal Spam.
• Horizontal spam typically represents someone trying to get a message across to the greatest number of people, regardless of whether or not the message is is relevant to those newsgroups or of interest to the people who receive it.
• Excessive Multi-Posting (EMP) is posting an article to dozens of newsgroups or more, one newsgroup per post.
• To multi-post is to send a single message over and over again to multiple newsgroups, as opposed to crossposting which is to send a message just once with multiple newsgroups specified in the headers.
• The host command is a newer alternatlve to the nslookup command.
• New web domains, when they are entered into DNS, must be assigned one or more authoritative name servers.
• These authoritative servers are where the rest of the world will be sent when looking for hosts in this new domain.
• A new network was formed for educational purposes, internet 2, that has the same purpose as the original internet but will be for non-commercial use only and (hopefully) spam-free.
• Spammers will multi-post (send a single message over and over again to multiple newsgroups) in order to force potential customers to see the same ad over and over again.
• Spam, Bulk Email: Spam originally meant to post many off-topic and inappropriate postings to a newsgroup(s), making it hard to read by lowering the signal to noise ratio.
• The term is from radio, but can also be applied to newsgroups.
• The "signal" in a newsgroup is regular postings which are on-topic.
• The "noise" in a newsgroup is everything else that does not help contribute to the purpose for which the newsgroup was created.
