New Proxies 2010

  • Newer spam blockers can learn to recognize what is spam and what isn't, and deletes the unwanted mail before it reaches your inbox.
  • This allows blocklists to be updated continuously as new sources of spam are discovered, permitting clients to have up-to-the-minute information.
  • Horizontal spam: spam which consists of a large number of messages sent to a large number of newsgroups.
  • Horizontal spam typically represents someone trying to get a message across to the greatest number of people, regardless of whether or not the message is is relevant to those newsgroups or of interest to the people who receive it.
  • Without dnsbl services, system administrators are forced to manually add each new source of spam to their deny lists as they are discovered.
  • The unfortunate news though is even though you can report spam, more of them keep coming.
  • Along with e-mail, rlogin/telnet, wais (gopher), and ftp, usenet news is one of the original applications to find a home on the internet in the days before the web.
  • Articles should be crossposted to the newsgroups to which they are relevant and no more.
  • Crossposting is not, in itself, considered net abuse unless done in excess or to many non-relavent newsgroups.
  • New web domains, when they are entered into DNS, must be assigned one or more authoritative name servers.
  • These authoritative servers are where the rest of the world will be sent when looking for hosts in this new domain.
  • The term is from radio, but can also be applied to newsgroups.
  • The "signal" in a newsgroup is regular postings which are on-topic.
  • The "noise" in a newsgroup is everything else that does not help contribute to the purpose for which the newsgroup was created.
