A volunteer organization working towards effective legislation to resolve the spam issues. Spammers sometimes may threaten litigation against individuals when someone posts threats or exposes private information about the spammer. Often it is all bluster on the spammers part. Massive floods of forged articles, typically intended to disrupt a newsgroup, in which gibberish articles containing reasonable-looking headers are spammed to the group, make the legitimate articles too difficult to find. A Throw-Away Account is a cheap account acquired for the purpose of spamming, with the knowledge that the account will be quickly cancelled, but not in time to stop the spam. Access to the mail system from suspected spam addresses can then be slowed or temporarily suspended. A Teergrube (or tarpit) is an intentionally slow server that aims to trap spammers using harvesting programs. Spambait: bogus e-mail addresses deliberately planted on a website with the expectation that a spambot will harvest them and thereby pollute its output. A week later, the user doesn't understand why their account has been shut down for spamming. RBL, maps rbl, is an online database of email spam sites that may be used for email spam filtering, either on a personal basis or used by an entire site.
