Sender Callout Exchange
- A mail host is a computer on the internet that is dedicated to transferring e-mail from senders to recipients.
- In the most general case, the sender of an e-mail message usually transfers it from his computer (using his mail client) to a mail transfer agent (MTA) within his provider's domain.
- Greylist: Senders who are not block-listed (excluded) or allow listed (accepted) can be placed on a greylist.
- Some anti-spam software can send greylisted addresses an automated response, challenging the sender to confirm their legitimacy.
- Although commonly used as an anti-spam system, and available with a number of mail transfer agents, sender verification callout has many of the same problems as challenge-response.
- Since most spam has forged "from:" lines, the verification step will result in an unwanted connection to the sender's system, tying up bandwidth of an innocent third party.
- This will cause all forged from: addresses to be accepted by the system trying to use sender verification callout.
- Etrust anti-spam allows mail only from approved senders into your inbox.
- You can make a list of approved senders by using your address book and existing contacts.
- All mail from unapproved senders goes into a separate folder for review or elimination.
- Sender verification callout: A spam-prevention system in which the identity of the sender of incoming email is verified before the email is accepted.
- The standard method is for the receiving system to connect to the mail server specified in the "from:" header and verify the sender's identity.
- Then a "challenge" message is automatically sent back to the sender, asking for a response, and if such a response is received, the sender's original message is delived.
- SPF (Sender Policy Framework) allows the owner of a domain to publishes an SPF record in the domain's DNS zone.
