MIME is a necessary update to the SMTP-based mail system because SMTP does not allow non-ASCII text data to appear anywhere in e-mail messages. This allows blocklists to be updated continuously as new sources of spam are discovered, permitting clients to have up-to-the-minute information. Etrust updates the list automatically by checking outgoing messages. Personal emails and email updates and advertisements that have been consented to are not covered under this law. Also not covered are "transactional or relationship messages," which are emails that pertain to agreed-upon transactions or emails that update a customers in an existing business relationship.
