• Email Harvesting: the process of scanning the internet to identify email addresses in order to create lists for spamming.
• The definition widely used in electronic messaging and email defines spam as a disruptive, commercial message that is unsolicited and usually sent indiscriminately.
• Although commonly used as an anti-spam system, and available with a number of mail transfer agents, sender verification callout has many of the same problems as challenge-response.
• Since most spam has forged "from:" lines, the verification step will result in an unwanted connection to the sender's system, tying up bandwidth of an innocent third party.
• If a large spam run uses the same domain in the forged "from:" lines, the innocent server will be barraged with verification requests.
• In addition, some domains will accept email to any user id either because the domain has a "catch-all" address or as part of its own anti-spam measures.
• If you do set up a spam catch-all, make sure and check it every once in a while.
• It's always good to surf through your spam folder every now and then.
• Spammers, of course, don't want you to reply and don't want you to know who they are.
• So the from: field won't help you if you want to determine where the spam email comes from.
• Botnet: A term typically applied to a group of open proxy computers ("zombies") used for spam transmission and related tasks.
• The operator of a botnet can use its services for his own spamming, or can sell them to other spammers for profit.
• Don't do business with anybody that helps the spammers.
• White hat: good anti-spam policies.
