There are steps that you can take to avoid spammers without the use of software.
This is an easy target for spammers to find long lists of email addresses to target.
Be especially wary of signing any sort of petition too, since these can be created by spammers for the list of names and email addresses.
You should never respond to or unsubscribe from spam email, you should use multiple email addresses, and you should not give your email address to companies you do not trust.
The use of buffers or third-party senders, helps to isolate the actual spammer from recrimination.
Open proxies (a third-party computer that has been configured to serve spammers by untraceably relaying their mail, hosting or guarding their websites, or performing other tasks, often known as "bots" or "zombies") are usually individual home or business pcs (typically running some version of microsoft windows) that have not been properly secured against malware attack, and that are connected to the internet full-time via some sort of broadband connection (so they're always available to the spammer).
As soon as you have an internet connection it becomes useful to have some form of spam blocking software to protect you from unwanted junk mail.
