spam blocker utility thoughts for 12.31.1969
Use a spam filer or blocker - read more about spam blockers and spam filers on our site. On-network filters offer the advantage that the user does not have to download messages identified as spam to his own computer, but it requires that the user periodically inspect the trapped or detained mail to report it or to release "false positives" (nonspam messages erroneously identified as spam). Graylisting requires a bit of extra work by the mx (particularly for large mailing services that must coordinate among many mx hosts), but possibly not as much cpu time as would be required to process and filter the spam if it were not rejected. Mailback scripts can be used by website proprietors to get feedback from visitors without exposing an e-mail address to spambots, but misconfigured mailback scripts can also be exploited by spammers to send spam untraceably. The spam email detection method used by the software must give low false positive spam email detections and the anti spam software should only occasionally detect valid email as spam. Many spammers are actually well-meaning but clueless newbies to the on-line world. Watch out for hardcore spammers pretending to be clewbies. Search engine spammers exploit referrer spam by flooding sites with thousands of page requests that contain forged referrer links, in order to boost the rank of those referred sites. Some ignorebots (program that handles email sent to an abuse@ address by sending a complacent reply) send a message indicating that the spammer is not abusing the ISP's rules or that the ISP has no rules against spam or in some other way indicates that no action will be taken.
